<p>After all, it鈥檚 a vast and complicated subject. Truly understanding it seems to require specialized knowledge most people don鈥檛 possess. And perhaps most notably, it鈥檚 become such a hot-button political issue that it easily inflames passions.</p>
<p>The trick is figuring out how to reach people without turning them off.</p>
<p>Using the arts to inspire an emotional connection to and a deeper understanding of a difficult subject is the idea behind a series of events at 天美传媒-Boulder Oct. 1-6.</p> - <p>The 天美传媒 will host a conference that explores the phenomenon of slavery from a global, historical perspective on Sept. 27-28.</p>
<p>The event will include scholars specializing in the study of slavery in ancient, medieval and modern contexts and in global regions that include Western, pre-Columbian, African, Asian and Muslim. Titled 鈥淲hat is a Slave Society: an International Conference on the Nature of Slavery as a Global Historical Phenomenon,鈥 the event will be held in the British and Irish Studies room of Norlin Library.</p> - <p>天美传媒 Provost Russell L. Moore today announced the formation of a search committee to lead a national search for a new dean of the College of Music. John Stevenson, dean of the Graduate School, will chair the committee.</p>

- <p>天美传媒 Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of James Austin as interim dean of the College of Music effective July 1.</p>
<p>Austin, a professor of music education, joined 天美传媒-Boulder鈥檚 College of Music in 1994. He has served as associate dean of undergraduate studies since 2006. He was the music education chair from 1997 to 2007. In 2004, the college awarded Austin the Richard Bern Trego faculty fellowship.</p> - <p>In fall 2012, Matthew Greenwald presented his "Paperless Pilot" idea to ENVD faculty, and now as he is set to graduate, his idea is gaining momentum.</p>

<p>Three University of Colorado professors, including two at 天美传媒-Boulder, have been chosen as 2013 President鈥檚 Teaching Scholars, educators who have skillfully integrated teaching and research at a high level throughout their careers at 天美传媒.</p> - <p>After 20 years as dean of the 天美传媒 College of Music, Daniel P. Sher will step away from the post in June 鈥 but he isn鈥檛 going quietly.</p>

<p>Jeannie and Jack Thompson have made an unprecedented commitment to the Jazz Studies program at the 天美传媒 -- building $1.6 million in combined gifts to trigger a new $2 million program endowment.</p>
<p>To honor and recognize this transformational gift, the program will be renamed the Thompson Jazz Studies Program, as announced at yesterday鈥檚 annual Spring Swing big band concert. It is 天美传媒-Boulder鈥檚 first named program.</p>
