Back on November 20, when Patty Limerick, director of the Center of American West, and Jennifer Ho, director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts, held their first Zoom public program to discuss�� the divisiveness splintering US society, neither of them said, “Get braced. It’s going to get worse.” Unable to predict the future, Jennifer and Patty have done their best to take in and reflect on the ongoing crises shaking in the nation.

On March 12, 2021, they reunited on the Zoom screen to continue their conversation and, especially, to assess the shredded�� state of empathy, common ground, and shared hope in the wake of the January 6 violent takeover of�� the United States Capitol.

Sharing their strategies for dealing with contentious people and situations, Patty and Jennifer aimed to be a little more contentious themselves, maintaining respect for one another but still welcoming opportunities to say to each other, “Can you help me understand how you came to hold a belief that initially makes no sense to me?” The audience was encouraged to propose topics and questions that might invite a spirited and congenial disagreement between these two good-natured souls.

Lunch with Limerick is a one-hour virtual lunch-time series where Patty Limerick interviews a range of guests on current issues and a variety of topics relevant to the West and beyond.
